Black Butler – Ciel – Funeral Outfit

Ciel wears this outfit most notably at Madame Red’s funeral but also at the very end of season 1 of the anime (and during the second ED). I haven’t finished season 2 so I’m not sure if/where it appears. It’s very striking and sombre. Always click for larger images!

The coat is well-tailored to fit him. According to this concept art (left) from season 2, it’s made of eight panels. There are two on each side of the front. The back is split into top and bottom. One panel on top, with darts going down to the waist for a tailored back; then three on the bottom (one on each side of the back slit).

The concept art shows a slit in the back of the coat. However, it’s clear in the Madame Red funeral scene in both anime and manga that there are two pleats in the back of the coat, not one central slit. Both are valid options.

 

If you go with two pleats, the back could be built with only two pieces – the top piece the same as the one with the slit, and the bottom piece with two pleats in it on either side. (Your choice of pleat method; it’s a box pleat like on many school skirts)

In the center back there is a band, pointed on both ends, with two buttons on it. It covers the center back seam and the two side darts. Like on many of his outfits, it serves the functional purpose to ensure that the back slit does not rip open from the pressure of walking.

There are eight silver buttons, arranged in the double-breasted pattern, on the front of the jacket. They match the back buttons and the three buttons on either sleeve.

The collar is small and high, not showing much of the shirt underneath, with notched lapels. This is slightly different from the funeral scene where the collar dips lower to show more of the tie. Your choice again.

There is probably a pocket by his left lapel where he put the rose but it’s hard to see. I’m making this assumption off this variant outfit from chapter 19 – it’s identical to this but with a folded handkerchief in the pocket.

The rose is red for Madame Red but in the second ED of the first anime season it’s white.

Under it, Ciel wears a plain white button-down shirt with a highly starched collar. It’s very proper. The cuffs do show a bit beyond the coat sleeve.

The tie is plain black. Realistically it should have a good woven texture but none is shown.

The shorts match the coat in colour. They’re a bit above the knee – they look more childish than many of his others – and have a neat pressed line down the center front and back.

His socks are black and are held up by plain black garters. The fastening on them is silver.

The shoes are plain but elegant. The tongue sticks up higher than the rest of the shoe, separating from it. There is a small heel and a buckle in front. The buckle appears to be for decor only – the anime shows the strap through it to be plain and likely to be leather; but the manga shows it as a crinkly sash. Either way, it’s black. There’s a little loop on either side as well that keeps the sash from going anywhere in the manga.

Note: I’m having trouble seeing the exact colour of the earrings he wears but instead of his typical earrings I think they’re black instead of blue. Could be wrong. HERE is a link for his other common accessories.
